Famous Faces

Over the years, the Tens has had some of the biggest names in world rugby grace the tournament. Here are just a few who have appeared in the last decade:

Jonah Lomu

Known as one of rugby’s most intimidating players on the field, Jonah Lomu burst onto the international rugby scene during the 1994 Hong Kong 7s tournament. He has since made a name for himself by becoming the top player at the 1995 World Cup in South Africa, becoming the all-time top try scorer in the Rugby World Cup with 15 tries and by scoring countless tries for his country throughout his career. Shortly before Lomu announced his retirement from competitive rugby, he participated in the 2007 Hong Kong Tens, making an appearance as a member of the HSBC New Zealand Legends team.

George Gregan

George Gregan is rugby union’s most-capped international with 139 test caps for Australia from 1994 to 2007, winning the Rugby World Cup in 1999.

One of the sport’s best-recognised players, the shaven-headed scrumhalf competed at the Hong Kong Sevens early in his career and went on to compete at four Rugby World Cups (1995-2007). Gregan, who was born in Zambia, played Super Rugby for the ACT Brumbies from 1996 to 2007, helping lead them to victories in 2001 and 2004.

After the 2007 Rugby World Cup, he finished his playing career in Japan and in March 2011 he came to Hong Kong to star for the BGC Asia-Pacific Barbarians in the GFI HKFC Tens.

Justin Marshall

Justin Marshall is New Zealand’s most-capped scrumhalf with 81 caps and starred for the BGC Asia-Pacific Barbarians in the 2011 GFI HKFC Tens, helping the all-star side reach the final.

Standing 1.79 metres tall and weighing 95kg, Marshall was bigger than most scrumhalves and scored a record 24 test tries for New Zealand, a tally that more than doubles the next-best tally for an All Black scrumhalf.

Marshall captained his country five times and played in two Rugby World Cups, and was part of a renowned half-back partnership with Andrew Mehrtens for both New Zealand and the Canterbury Crusaders.

Christian Cullen

With 46 tries in 58 tests, Cullen was the sixth-highest international try scorer in rugby union history (as of early 2012), one of the best full backs of all time and one of the greatest All Blacks of his generation.

Cullen played for the BGC Asia Pacific Barbarians at the 2011 GFI HKFC Tens,15 years after springing to international fame at the 1996 Hong Kong Sevens, scoring a record 18 tries including seven in one game and began his All Black career later that year, running in a record seven tries in his first two matches against Samoa and Scotland.

Born in Paraparaumu, the ‘Paekakariki Express’ helped Gordon Tietjens sevens team win gold at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and played in the 1999 Rugby World Cup. He once held the record for most tries in Super Rugby and currently lies fourth with 56 tries for Hurricanes from 1996 to 2003.

Bobby Skinstad

South African legend Skinstad, brought a team of players to the 2009 GFI HKFC Tens under the name of ‘Scatterlings of Africa’ where they won the Plate competition.

Skinstad has represented his national team 42 times, scoring 11 tries, and rounded off an incredible career with World Cup victory in 2007.

Waisale Serevi

Whilst Serevi represented his country, Fiji, at both 15s and 7s, he is most well known for his achievements in the shorter form of the game. Serevi’s 7s career started at the 1989 Hong Kong 7s and he played almost every year until 2005. Widely regarded as the greatest 7s player of all time having captured every available honour during his glittering career.

The 2010 GFI HKFC Tens was lucky enough to have Serevi as their face of the tournament where he lead Hill & Associates Hong Kong Barbarians to victory in the Plate competition.

Lawrence Dallaglio

It is with great pleasure that the 2011 GFI HKFC Tens welcomes Lawrence Dallaglio as a VIP guest to this years tournament. It will be an honour to welcome this ex England captain and 2003 World Cup winner to the Hong Kong Football Club.

Brian Lima

Known to many as ‘The Chiropractor’ for his bone crunching tackles, Brian Lima played for Samoa as the youngest player in the 1991 Rugby World Cup. He is the only player to have played in 5 world cups, his fifth and final being the 2007 World Cup in France, after which he retired. Lima played for the Hill & Associates Hong Kong Barbarians in the 2008 GFI HKFC Tens where he helped them win the Plate competition.

Joe Roff & Toutai Kefu

Roff and Kefu turned out for PriceWaterhouseCoopers International Panthers in 2006, leading them to victory in the Plate Competition.

Both players were members of the 1999 Australia World Cup winning squad that beat France in the final at the Millennium Stadium in Wales.

Conrad Smith, Jerome Kaino, Sione Lauaki, Ben Atiga and Nick Evans

This group of All Blacks all played in an incredible year for the Tens in 2003. Kaino, Lauaki, Atiga and Evans all turned out for the New Zealand Metro team that tasted victory in the cup competition whilst All Black legend Smith’s team didn’t even make the final.

Unlike the rest of our Famous Faces, all five were yet to play international rugby and is an example of the talented youngsters that the Tens have had grace the tournament on their road to stardom.
