AWESOME METRO MAKE IT THREE TENS TITLES IN A ROW

Hong Kong: March 27, 2008 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fortis New Zealand Metro completed a hat-trick of GFI HKFC Tens titles with a comprehensive 38-0 victory over Penguins on Thursday (March 27).

The powerful Kiwis had looked outstanding throughout the two-day tournament and then moved up another gear in the final as they ran in six tries.

Metro manager Barry Gallagher was delighted with his team's dominant performance in front of a large and boisterous crowd at Hong Kong Football Club.

"We knew we had to step it up and that the Penguins weren't going to be easy and would be coming out with a lot of determination," said Gallagher.

"But when you play finals rugby it's about who takes their opportunities and our boys did fantastically well, they just stamped their mark on the game early on.

"Our scrummaging was superb and our defence has been outstanding all through the tournament with only five points against us. We used our bench really well and we had a lot of speed."

Metro, winners of the Tens in 2006 and again last year, started the day with a bruising 29-0 quarter-final win over Borneo Eagles and then edged past HSBC New Zealand Legends 7-5 in a thrilling semi-final.

The showdown against Penguins was a rematch of last year's final and Metro proved unstoppable, racing into a 19-0 half-time lead thanks to tries from Sona Taumalolo, David Falealili and Winston Stanley, with Jack McPhee kicking a pair of conversions.

Further tries from Will Crispin, James Maher and Israel Dagg, plus two more McPhee conversions, wrapped up an emphatic victory.

"The boys played really well, we knew it was important to come out firing right from the start and we did that," said Metro captain Kane Hancy.

"There was no one really testing us on the first day but then we had a quarter-final against the Borneo Eagles that was quite physical and a really tough semi against the Legends and that set us up for the final."

Penguins, playing in the Tens for just the second time after making their debut last year, had reached the final with a hard fought 14-5 semi-final victory over Aliens from New Zealand.

Hill & Associates Hong Kong Barbarians won the Plate with a 28-7 victory over the Borneo Eagles.

The trophy capped an impressive tournament by the Hong Kong side whose only two losses came against Metro in the pool stages and Penguins in the Cup quarter-finals.

In the Bowl final, Yorkshire Windows International Panthers beat Tens debutants RuckU Spartans 7-0.

French Pyrenees, another team making their first appearance in the tournament, won the Shield by beating Overseas Old Boys 17-5.

Sixteen teams from around the globe took part in the Tens – the world's premier ten-a-side rugby tournament.

The Tens was first held in 1986 to celebrate the HKFC's centenary and is now firmly established as a highlight of the Asian rugby calendar.

CHAMPIONS METRO IN POINTS SCORING SPREE

Hong Kong: March 26, 2008

Defending champions Fortis New Zealand Metro put on an awesome display of try scoring power as they stormed into the Cup quarter-finals of the 2008 GFI HKFC Tens on Wednesday (March 26).

The top seeds comfortably won all three of their pool matches on the first day of the two-day tournament at Hong Kong Football Club.

Metro, who are going for their third title in a row, overwhelmed China Agricultural University 101-0, Hill & Associates Hong Kong Barbarians 39-0 and Yorkshire Windows International Panthers 68-0 to top Pool A.

"It was difficult to judge anything from the first game but it was a lot more physical against the Barbarians and that gave us a bit more structure to play to," said Metro manager Barry Gallagher.

"The goal for our third game was to finish on a good note and we were happy to keep our line intact.

"We just have to take every game as it comes because there are plenty of good teams here. We just want to go out, play our game and let the guys enjoy their rugby."

The Hong Kong Barbarians, with Samoan Rugby World Cup legend Brian Lima in their ranks, still qualified for the Cup quarter-finals with wins over the Panthers (12-7) and China Agricultural University (28-0).

The second seeded Penguins – the elite UK-based touring team – were also hugely impressive, notching three wins to head the Pool B standings.

Penguins beat Multiplex Marauders from Dubai 83-0, Kukri Cardiff University 47-7 and Borneo Eagles 36-0.

"We've picked up an injury in each of our three games – one is definitely out and the other two are probably out, so it's been a hard day for injuries, but that's part of rugby," said Penguins director of rugby Craig Brown.

"We always felt the last game against the Eagles was going to be our toughest and that's how it turned out.

"It was a very hard, physical game and it was awesome defence from our guys. A lot of our tries came from our defence because we were pinning them down, making them work hard and capitalising on mistakes."

Aliens, the third seeds from New Zealand, took time to find their form but still registered three wins to top Pool C.

But fourth seeds Davetalevu from Fiji – Cup semi-finalists a year ago – failed to reach the Cup rounds this time after losing twice in Pool D. HSBC New Zealand Legends won the pool with a 100 per cent record.

Sixteen teams from around the globe are taking part in the Tens – the world's premier ten-a-side rugby tournament.

The tournament resumes at Hong Kong Football Club on Thursday (March 27) at 10:40am with the first of the Bowl quarter-finals.

Play continues throughout the day with the Cup final kicking off at 8:00pm.

Fans can gain entry by paying at the public entrance located next to the Hong Kong Jockey Club's headquarters in Sports Road. Cost of admission is HK$200.

ALIENS LOOK TO YOUTH FOR TENS INSPIRATION

Hong Kong: March 25, 2008 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Former champions Aliens have put the accent on youth as they attempt to win the GFI HKFC Tens for the first time since 2005.

The perennial Kiwi contenders, third seeds this year, have included three promising schoolboys in their squad on the recommendation of New Zealand great Eric Rush.

The trio – Ashton Tuck, Billy James Ropira and Kimami Sitauti – will strut their stuff when the two-day Tens tournament kicks off at Hong Kong Football Club on Wednesday (March 26).

"Eric Rush has told me these guys can be future All Blacks," said Aliens coach Willie Los'e. "I can only follow the advice of a great player like Eric, put my trust in them and let them show their skills.

"I don't think these guys will disappoint anyone. They've got tremendous attitude and they're great ambassadors for the sport."

Los'e is particularly excited by Sitauti, just 16 years old and a pupil at the prestigious Mount Albert Grammar School in Auckland.

"Eric told me he wanted to take Kimami to play at the national sevens, but he was six months too young at the time, so he recommended we bring him to Hong Kong," said Los'e. "Having seen him in training, I can't wait to see him play."

Second seeded Penguins are back at the Tens a year after reaching the Cup final on their first appearance in the tournament.

The elite UK-based touring team have brought a powerful squad that includes two IRB Sevens record holders.

Amasio Valence is New Zealand's most prolific scorer in IRB Sevens history with 1,124 points.

Fiji's Saula Rabaka holds the record for the most individual points in a game – 32 in a 71-0 win over Malaysia in Shanghai in 2001.

"Last year's Tens was a very enjoyable experience for the boys and we're happy to be back," said Penguins director of rugby Craig Brown.

"Amasio Valence has a well deserved reputation and we're delighted to have him with us. There's obviously less space in this tournament than there is in sevens, but he made his name playing in the Tens as a teenager, so we'll see how it goes."

Fortis New Zealand Metro – champions for the past two years – are top seeds for this year's tournament. Their line-up includes Tonga's Rugby World Cup captain, Nili Latu.

Samoan legend Brian Lima – the only man to appear in five Rugby World Cups – will play for the Hill & Associates Hong Kong Barbarians.

Sixteen teams from around the world will be going for glory in the Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield at the Tens.

Pool matches take place on Wednesday (March 26), beginning at 11:00am, while Thursday (March 27) will see the knockout rounds being played.

Fans can gain admission by purchasing two-day tickets, costing HK$200 each, at Hong Kong Football Club during the tournament.
